Cyrinda Foxe had relationships with David Bowie and James Williamson of The Stooges while working under Tony Defries as a publicist for MainMan, Bowie's management company. She also appeared in the music video for Bowie's 1973 single, "The Jean Genie". Bowie wanted the video to depict "Ziggy as a kind of Hollywood street-rat" with a "consort of the Marilyn brand". This led to Foxe's casting, and she flew from New York to San Francisco especially for the shoot.Bowie said of the song "I wrote it for her amusement in her apartment. Sexy girl."Foxe records in her memoir that Bowie said to her "I want to write you a song. What do you want?", to which Foxe replied "something like the Yardbirds". Foxe in later years maintained a fondness for Bowie referring to him as a "great lover" and stating that she "really cherish[ed her] time" with Bowie.
In his memoir, Arthur Kane characterized Foxe as being "bright [and] very magnetic" and having "an effervescence about her" as "[she was] very much a character of her own creation."

"The Jean Genie" is a song by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, originally released in November 1972 as the lead single to his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. Co-produced by Ken Scott, Bowie recorded it with his backing band the Spiders from Mars â comprising Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. According to Bowie, it was "a smorgasbord of imagined Americana", with a protagonist inspired by Iggy Pop, and the title being an allusion to author Jean Genet. One of Bowie's most famous tracks, it was promoted with a film clip featuring Andy Warhol associate Cyrinda Foxe and peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart.

The Jean Genie was Bowieâs eighteenth UK single. It is fundamentally a locked down blues riff and explosive chorus. But it is what Bowie and the Spiders from Mars do with that formula that shows their musicianship, creativity and style. A short guitar intro leads into the bass heavy, harmonica driven stomp of a Bo Diddley-esque groove. Bowie is nonchalant, almost speaking the lyrics: âA small Jean Genie / Snuck off to the city / Strung out on lasers / And slash back blazers / Ate all your razors / While pulling the waiters / Talking bout Monroe / And walking on Snow Whiteâ. Overladen with rhymes and impressionistic in its images, it tells the story of a lad coming to the city and going wild, insane â sex (with waiters) and drugs (cocaine) and rock n roll. The Jean Genie figure â with the androgynous name and bisexual sexuality â is cut from the same cloth as Ziggy Stardust, except earth bound rather than alien. The sci-fi element is downplayed and street grit New York realism triumphs here. Then the chorus erupts â âHe's outrageous, he screams and he bawls / Jean Genie let yourself go!â Opium den, LGBTQ, Factory, Pork, Iggy Pop â itâs all in there. Then there are those touches⊠The shaker that that rises in the mix after the chorus like a python being charmed (âsmiles like a reptileâ). That third repetition of the riff-verse with the curtailed lyrics giving way to the musical breakdown and intensification. And that coda, Ronson mirroring the shaker to the final feverish spiraling electric ecstasy. Awesome. Written on a tour bus outside Cleveland during the US tour in late September 1972, lyrics composed in actress Cyrinda Foxeâs New York apartment a few days later, it was recorded in two hours in RCAâs Sixth Avenue studio on 6 October, and released later that month in the US, and November in the UK (which weâll discuss a bit later with the video). It entered the UK charts at 33 the following week, climbing to #2 early in 1973. The single â apparently â is a slightly different mix than the one that was mastered for the Aladdin Sane (1973) album:

Written by David Bowie. Recorded 6 October 1972. Released UK 24 November 1972 (early release in USA of end of October). Available on Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary Edition (2003).

Legendary 70s Music Photographer Mick Rock Has Passed Away at 72
Mick Rock, born Michael Edward Chester Smith, who is regarded as one of the most influential British music photographers and is referred to âthe man who shot the 70s,â has passed away. He was 72.
Rock photographed a host of some of the most iconic names in rock music, including Queen, T. Rex, Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, Ozzy Osbourne, The Ramones, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Thin Lizzy, Geordie, Mötley CrĂŒe, and Blondie. Some of the most memorable shots of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust were shot by Rock when he was acting as the musicianâs photographer (âacting,â since he was not Bowieâs photographer in an official capacity at the time according to Inside Hook).

Rock would become known as âthe man who shot the 70sâ in an interview with the BBC in 2007. After what is described of years of rock and roll excess, Rock would have heart surgery and a kidney transplant in the 1990s.
âI lived the life,â he said later. âAs well as taking the pictures, I lived the life.â
After giving up cigarettes and drugs, he continued his work and photographed modern rock icons like Pharrell Williams, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus. He published several books of his work, including 2015âs The Rise of David Bowie: 1972-1973. In 2016, he was the subject of the documentary Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock.

Rockâs passing was shared on his official Twitter account:
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share our beloved psychedelic renegade Mick Rock has made the Jungian journey to the other side. Those who had the pleasure of existing in his orbit, know that Mick was always so much more than âThe Man Who Shot The 70s.â He was a photographic poet â a true force of nature who spent his days doing exactly what he loved, always in his own delightfully outrageous way.
The stars seemed to effortlessly align for Mick when he was behind the camera; feeding off of the unique charisma of his subjects electrified and energized him. His intent always intense. His focus always total. A man fascinated with image, he absorbed visual being through his lens and immersed himself in their art, thus creating some of the most magnificent images rock music has ever seen. to know Mick was to love him. He was a mythical creature; the likes of which we shall never experience again.
Let us not mourn the loss, but instead celebrate the fabulous life and extraordinary career of Michael David Rock. While you do so in your own way, we must ask that the privacy of his nearest and dearest be respected at this time. Therefore, there will be no further comments.
As noted by DPReview, in 2015 The Art of Photographyâs Ted Forbes published a 25-minute interview with Rock that discusses his incredible career.
